Esthetic Gingival Surgery for the General Dentist

A Hands-On Course

This participation course will describe treatment for the soft tissue dilemmas that the general dentist faces on a daily basis. These include gingival recession, exposed crown margins, biologic width impingements, uneven gingival margins, and the gummy smile. Step by step procedures for treatment of these conditions will be described in detail. This course will emphasize the skills necessary to do connective tissue grafting and esthetic crown lengthening. Each participant will have the opportunity to do these surgeries on a simulation model specifically designed for teaching connective tissue grafting and esthetic crown lengthening. In addition, live patient surgical demonstrations of theconnective tissue graft and esthetic crown lengthening will be performed.

  • Flap management and suturing techniques
  • Root coverage procedures – as well as covering exposed margins
  • Treatment of the gummy smile
  • Esthetic and Functional crown lengthening
  • Required Instruments and Suture Selection

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the etiologies of the Gummy Smile
  • Diagnose altered passive eruption
  • Perform esthetic crown lengthening surgery
  • Perform the required suturing techniques for the crown lengthening surgery and connective tissue grafting
  • Describe 4 classes of gingival recession and accompanying prognosis for treatment for each class
  • Perform connective tissue graft
  • Describe treatment for surgical complications associated with both surgical procedures

This course provides 16 continuing education credit hours and includes lecture, participation and live patient demonstration.
